Why college tutors

Serious help that doesn't feel like more school

A college tutor helps a middle school student with a science worksheet at a kitchen table
Online, at the library, or at your kitchen table.

They took these classes recently

Our tutors sat through the same courses a few years ago, often in the same schools, so they know what teachers expect.

Students actually listen to them

A tutor who's close in age feels like a mentor, not another adult checking homework. That makes it easier to ask "dumb" questions.

Carefully selected

We interview every tutor, check their grades in the subjects they teach, and run a background check before they meet a student.

A window into college

High schoolers get honest answers about classes, applications and campus life from someone living it.

Our standards

How we choose tutors, and how sessions work

Here is what every tutor has to clear before they meet a student.

Before a tutor is hired

  1. Grades check. An A in each course they tutor, or in a more advanced course in the same subject.
  2. Interview. A live interview where they explain a real homework problem to us.
  3. References. At least one from a professor, teacher or employer.
  4. Background check. Completed through a national screening service before they meet any student.

During every session

  • A parent or guardian is home for in-home sessions.
  • Library sessions happen in open study areas.
  • Tutors message parents, not students, about scheduling.
  • Online sessions use a shared link sent to the parent.
  • A short progress note goes to parents every month.
Who's behind AtCollege Tutors

AtCollege Tutors is run by Najib Masoud, a college student in Northern Virginia. He does every consultation personally, matches each student with a tutor, and checks in with families every month.

Questions go straight to him at AtCollege.Tutors@gmail.com.

Giving back

The AtCollege Scholarship

We're college students from this community, and we think good tutoring shouldn't depend on what a family can afford. As we grow, we'll set aside tutoring at no cost each month for local students whose families can't cover the cost.

Scholarship students get the same tutors, the same sessions and the same check-ins as every other family. Part of what every family pays helps make this possible.

Know a student who could use help?

  1. Email us with the student's grade, subject and a few words about their situation.
  2. We'll set up a short, private conversation with the family.
  3. When a spot opens, we match them with a tutor at no cost.

Email with the subject line "Scholarship." Teachers, counselors and community groups can refer students too.

Want to talk it through?

Book a 15-minute consultation. We'll learn about your student and recommend a tutor and plan. No payment needed.
